The pounding of the 40-kilometre-long Gaza coastal strip by Israeli jets, tanks and ground forces continues. Over 650 people are now reported dead in ten days of fighting. Israel’s claims that many were Hamas militants are, at best, highly dubious. The demographic and geographic realities of Gaza, a territory split in half by Israeli troops, makes it inevitable that when bombs fall, children, women, the elderly and the sick are among those who die.

Just as it seems things are settling down on the Pakistan-India front, someone or the other on the Indian side acts to hike up the tensions once more. First it was the Indian foreign minister, Pranab Mukherjee, who said that Islamabad was being evasive in its response to the 26/11 dossier. A day after that it was the Indian army chief, General Deepak Kapoor, who said that Pakistani troops had moved to the border with India and that "all options were open". Not without irony, the general at th... Continue reading ...

Wisdom provides us with the capacity to solve real life problems. So, acquiring wisdom becomes a must if we want to live meaningful lives. As we live through life and its experiences, it is vital that we reflect on such experiences to make our subsequent steps in life easier. As Immanuel Kant, a famous philosopher said that “Science is organized knowledge. Wisdom is organized life.”
So, if wisdom enables a person to make more sound decisions, take a shortcut path to success, recalibra...

A recent editorial published in Khaleejtimes.com fuels the debate again between those of us who respect the “hijab” as our identity and those of us who want to simply be our “normal selves”. The editorial by an American Muslim convert highlights the Ahadeeth (sayings) of the prophet (saws) regarding women who decide to chose an alternate path to modesty as prescribed in Islam.
The issue I believe is not that whether women who choose not to wear the Hijab or dress modestly understan...

Everyone knows that Muslims, especially those living in North American and European countries have faced a lot of discrimination after the events of 9/11. Muslim women for example have constantly been criticized in the media and elsewhere about the Hijab and their Islamic lifestyles in general. While Muslims have reacted and responded to such discrimination in many ways, the Canadian Islamic Congress (CIC) decided to take a different approach on October 26th, 2007.

20 Million — According to many estimates, that’s the number of Muslims in Turkey, who oppose the wearing of hijab by Muslim women in universities and schools.
Heeding to that support and in respect of the “secular principles”, Turkey today has a ban on wearing Hijab in universities and schools. The ban has been in place for a few years.
Very recently however, the Turkish government led by Prime Minister Erdogan’s Justice and Development Party in association with the Nationalist ...

The Sunnah (traditions) of the Prophet SAWS, along with Quran, is the cornerstone of the teachings of Islam. Among majority of the scholars, the Sunnah of the Prophet Muhammad SAWS is defined as the sayings (Hadith Qauli or the verbal order), actions (Hadith Fa’lee or the action) or approval of actions (Hadith Taqreeri) that are related to the beliefs as well as rulings of the Islamic faith – both in terms of rituals as well as daily life actions. One of the issues that Muslims struggle with today is drawing the line between innovation (Bidaa’) and that what is lawful from an Islamic standpoint. All Muslims know the strict prohibition of the prophet against innovating things into religion. The nature of religious faith is quite mysterious. As part of their religious faiths, people believe in a variety of deities. There are people who have religious faith in the unseen supreme transcendental power and then there are others who believe in some humans as Gods, animals (e.g. monkeys), fire, idols made of stone, and the list goes on.
A lot is associated with having a religious “faith”. Part of it has to do with beliefs passed on through generations. People’s identities ther...
